Thesis: Red Bull should not be looking for a new driver again

Looking at the results of the qualifying session for the Spanish Grand Prix you will probably experience deja vu. Yet another Red Bull Racing driver being outpaced by Verstappen by almost a second. It's already cost two drivers their lives, but this time the team would have to do things differently.

At Red Bull, the emphasis has always been on discovering new talent. And let's face it, no other junior programme has offered so many young talents the chance to race in Formula 1. On the other hand, no other team has shed so much talent either. Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon are just two names in a long list of drivers who were deemed too light.

And so the talent pool for 2021 was depleted and a veteran driver was the inevitable choice. In that respect, Sergio Perez is already a break in Red Bull's policy and perhaps it's an idea to continue that trend. Instead of letting Perez go after a disappointing season, Red Bull could give him confidence by extending his contract.

Red Bull Racing must also look at itself

Of course, it's not certain that Perez will have a disappointing season, but eighth place, almost a second behind Verstappen, is a far cry from the best of the best. Perez has shown earlier in the season, however, that he can be fast.

Perez blamed himself for the problem, claiming he wasn't fully fit, but Red Bull Racing might as well ask why their second placed drivers are struggling when they are doing well at other teams. The bottom line is Red Bull shouldn't be looking for a new driver again.
