When Mattia Binotto was selected as team boss for Ferrari, glory days were expected. However, things turned out differently and 2020 became a dramatic year. Still, the Italians kept faith in their leader and so next season Binotto may once again steer Ferrari as team boss. But Binotto is well prepared for another difficult season

In a year that saw Italy host three Grands Prix, Ferrari recorded a sixth-place finish in the Constructors Championship. Their worst result for some time. The Italian fans will be hoping for a sudden bounce back, but Binotto is on the cautious side.

"This year is going to be full of challenges. Visually we’ve drawn on our history, but we’re also looking to the future, which will always be defined by our Ferrari red," Binotto said in the Ferrari car launch video.

The new rules and regulations were due to arrive in Formula 1 this month, but the coronavirus delayed the introduction. As a result, 2022 will see the cars completely redesigned and Binotto seems to have one eye on those changes.

2020 v 2021

Very little has changed on the cars during the winter. Some teams have even opted to launch a 'B' version of their 2020 F1 challenger. That's not the case at Ferrari in terms of the naming system, but the Italian team boss makes Ferrari's situation clear in terms of car carry over.

"The car was born out of last year’s car due to the new regulations. So it was partially frozen but we tried to improve it in all of its areas, wherever it was possible. The aerodynamics was revised and it has a completely new power unit," he added.

"Its livery has also changed. As you can see the posterior is a burgundy colour similar to the very first Ferrari racing car, the 125S. It’s the same colour we used last year at Mugello."
