Fernando Alonso was hit by a car whilst cycling in Switzerland last week and suffered a broken jaw putting his return to F1 in a bit of doubt. However, Pat Symonds is already looking towards Alonso's 2022 potential.

Alonso has already indicated that he is fully focused on 2022, for which a major rule change is planned. Pat Symonds, former technical director at Renault where he was world champion with Alonso, believes the new regulations could be a great opportunity for Alonso.

"I think the 2022 car will be good for him because it will be a bit of a reset for everyone. And I think it will help Fernando a lot. "Will he be the first to figure out how to get the best performance out of that [2022] car? I think the answer will be yes," Symonds said as quoted by Motorlat.com.

Alonso has unrivaled adaptability

Symonds based this prediction not only on his work with Alonso at Renault but also on his conversations with the Spaniard about his Le Mans adventure. Symonds is working on the new regulations for the hypercar class there and Alonso's experience with the current prototypes shows how quickly the Spaniard can adapt, according to Symonds.

"It was fascinating to hear his insights on how he had learned to drive the LMP1 car and especially with the energy regeneration on that car. How he had discovered things that the other drivers had not yet discovered. They had been driving it for a while, he came along and said: 'If I do this, if I do that, if I accelerate here and brake here, I actually have more energy to play with. He's very, very good with that kind of thing," Symonds added..
