Red Bull close to new engine deal: 'Then we can develop that engine'

Red Bull Racing is doing everything in its power to take over the engine project from Honda from 2022 onwards. Not all other manufacturers are ready yet, but according to Helmut Marko, a deal is on the way that can ensure that Red Bull gets its own engine.

Red Bull Racing has been active in Formula 1 for a long time and had successful years with Renault between 2010 and 2013. When Renault started to focus more on its own team, Red Bull needed a new engine deal. Honda came at the right time, but they are quitting F1 at the end of the 2021 season. Red Bull want a freeze to enine development to make it easier for them to take over the Honda project.

''It is clear that not all manufacturers agree, but an agreement is on the way, because it makes sense. It's unacceptable that so many costs are being incurred on a complex engine that we know will soon no longer be used," says Marko to Motorsport-total.com.

Red Bull is therefore focusing entirely on the acquisition of the Honda engine and is not in discussion with other parties, says Marko, who also does not rule out Red Bull keeping the power source in-house when introducing a new engine. ''If the indications are right and there really will be an engine without MGU-H, it will remain innovative, but the costs should not exceed 50 million, then we can develop that engine in Milton Keynes," says Marko.
