On Friday the Technical Working Group of Formula 1 will meet to discuss two important points. What happens with the so-called 'Party Mode' and what aerodynamic changes will be possible in 2021?

First of all, the Party Mode. Formula 1 and the FIA want to abolish qualifying mode. It hopes that the gap that Mercedes has on the other teams will be narrowed in order to get more exciting races. The goal was to introduce this at the Belgian Grand Prix, but it is expected that it will be announced today that this will be postponed to the Italian Grand Prix.

Even less downforce in 2021

In addition to the qualification mode there is another important topic on the schedule according to Motorsport.it. In 2021 Pirelli will use the tyres from 2019, which had a hard time at Silverstone. To counteract the progress the teams are making in aerodynamics, it has already been decided that the floor of the cars will be without downforce elements in 2021.

However, the technical working group is now coming together to see what more could be done. Pirelli is worried about the extra downforce the teams will be able to find in the winter, which will only exacerbate the problems with the tyres. There are two ideas on the table: Red Bull Racing, for example, has made a proposal to reduce the rear wing and Ferrari has proposed to ban part of the floor for the rear tyres altogether.

Pirelli wants drivers on the limit

"We know that between now and 2021 teams can improve the cars enormously, so it could be that the pressure on the tyres will increase. We want to be ahead of this and make sure that next year there is no more overheating or even blisters," Mario Isola told the Italia source. The boss of Pirelli is aware that the drivers are not happy with this.

"The drivers are generally not happy about this, so we want to avoid blisters or overheated tyres. If that can be done by limiting the aerodynamics a bit, then the drivers are also able to push more during a race."
