McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl says that fans can “expect a tight and exciting battle” throughout the 2020 Formula 1 season, after pre-season testing has left the team understanding what improvements can be done.

McLaren recorded their best year for a while in 2019 as Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris helped the team to a P4 finish in the constructor’s championship.

The Woking based team had a relatively quiet couple of weeks for pre-season testing, with both drivers compiling a total of 802 laps of the Circuit de Catalunya.

But Seidl says it has been the teams best test for a while as they prepare for the opening race in Melbourne on March 15.

“This test has been the best for McLaren for some time, with strong reliability enabling us to complete our programme as planned and collect valuable information for analysis,” he said.

“We head to Melbourne feeling prepared for the start of the season, with good information on areas we need to develop and a good understanding of the work to be done.”

Last year McLaren became the dominant force of the midfield but 2020 could prove different with the much talked about ‘pink Mercedes’ of Racing Point, as well as Haas and Renault looking better.

“We knew coming here that 2020 was shaping up to be a competitive season,” Seidl added.

“This test has only reinforced that. The competition is so close and the fans can expect a tight and exciting battle – it will be a great season to watch.”
