Vettel: Ferrari arrive at German Grand Prix with an "open mind"
Evidence suggested from the British Grand Prix that Ferrari has managed to improve their qualifying pace, but still lagged behind during the race. Ahead of his home race, Sebastian Vettel says he'll go into the race with an open mind.
"It's always special to race in your home country, I was very close last year so let's see how close we can get this year. In recent races, we've been strong in qualifying and race pace is improving but we're open-minded. We start the weekend like that and see where it goes," Vettel said in the press conference.
During the race at Silverstone, Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly were both able to fight Vettel and Charles Leclerc. The gap between the two teams seems to have shrunk. Red Bull will be bringing upgrades to the German Grand Prix while Ferrari aren't set to make any changes.
Vettel still feels like he's ahead of his old team, but the clear goal is chase Mercedes for the Formula 1 world championship.
"Mercedes has an edge on everyone else, that's pretty clear. They seem to struggle on tracks where tyre wear is a bit higher but in terms of raw speed, that is the benchmark. [Between ourselves and Red Bull], it's been closed, most of the times we're ahead, sometimes behind but that's not the objective. The objective is to fight Mercedes," Vettel added.
