Ferrari test driver Marc Gene believes that Fernando Alonso could make a return to Formula 1 in 2020 but not with Ferrari. Alonso has not renewed his contract Toyota suggesting that a return to F1 could be in the pipeline.
“I think he will return, but not at Ferrari. It’s impossible,” Gene told AS newspaper in Barcelona.
“He did not renew his contract with Toyota, and that is a kind of signal that he wants to be free to decide.
“But he will return only on the condition that his car allows him to fight, and if not for victories, then at least for podiums,” he added.
Alonso has kept close connections with McLaren and perhaps if they continue to improve we could see Alonso back in a Formula 1 seat next season. The Spaniard left Formula 1 with the target of completing the triple crown and a win in the Indy 500 later on this year would cement him as one of the best drivers in history.
