Max Verstappen lost the lead in the Miami Grand Prix to Lando Norris. The safety car came out after a crash between Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant, but caught Verstappen (P2) instead of Norris, who was driving in the lead.

Norris held the lead after the first set of pit stops. The McLaren driver stayed out longer and could afford to do so, as he was the fastest man on track on his old mediums at the time. Verstappen had moved into second place after the pit stops of Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri.

At that moment, something strange happened: the safety car came out because of a crash between Magnussen and local hero Sargeant, but the FIA made a mistake. The safety car should have caught Norris as he was driving in the lead, but instead Norris was let past and Verstappen waited. This allowed Norris to continue at a brisk pace and make a pit stop well before the safety car reached start/finish. Only then did the safety car let the rest of the field pass, after which Norris was able to close in.
