Formula 2 has traditionally been the ultimate stepping-up class towards Formula 1. Almost all drivers on the current F1 grid have competed in this often spectacular series. If talents unexpectedly fail to make it to the top class of motorsport, there are always great alternatives, such as IndyCar, Formula E and the World Endurance Championship.

It is also normal for a driver to drive one, two or at most three seasons in F2. Since 2017, Boschung drove races in the junior championship in all seven seasons. Only last season, the Swiss managed to take his first victory in Bahrain. Then with a podium finish in the second race, also in Bahrain, Boschung even looked like a title contender.

Farewell to Formula 2

After the last free seat in Formula 2 was filled on Tuesday, it was clear that there was no place for Boschung - now 26 years old - anymore. At that, the Swiss announced his farewell to the class. He thanked everyone, talking about never giving up on dreams and shitting on what others think about you.

Shortly after he spread this message via Instagram and X, among others, another message followed. This was a lot more unexpected: "Yes, I am retiring." So while F2 is a stepping stone for most drivers, for 'routine' Boschung it appears to be the end station. So in 2024, the Swiss will no longer be seen anywhere on a grid.

A few hours later, Boschung came out with another tweet. In it, he stated, "I hereby announce my return to F2 in 2029! Just taking a short break."
