Formula 2 | Martins wins as Vesti has a dramatic race

Victor Martins won the main race in Formula 2. The race started on a still somewhat drying track at Silverstone. The spectacular race had no less than three safety cars.

Victor Martins started the race from pole position. Kush Maini started from second, and Red Bull Racing junior Ayumu Iwasa started third. It was the man starting from third who got away best, but Martins did not give up easily and entered the duel with Iwasa in turns 3 and 4. In the end, the Frenchman had the lead, but he later received a penalty for his overtaking action on the Japanese driver. Indeed, Martins briefly went four wheels outside the white lines during his overtaking move. After that, the Frenchman quickly consolidated his lead until the safety car came out. Amaury Cordeel stalled at Stowe Corner after an incident with Dennis Hauger.

Drama for Vesti

Championship leader Frederik Vesti started the main race from tenth position and was seventh after the start. However, the Dane went inside the lap before the incident between Cordeel and Hauger, and as a result Vesti lost a lot of ground. At the restart, the championship leader's already not-so-happy race ended. Vesti was hit from behind by Hauger on the restart and was unable to continue his race due to too much damage. This incident caused the second safety car.

Another crash in Formula 2

Soon after the second restart, there was another crash. This time it was between the two Campos Racing teammates Maini and Ralph Boschung. Both drivers crashed out and for the third time the safety car came out. During the third safety car, the drivers who had started on hard tyres made their pit stops, giving Martins the lead again. Behind the Frenchman were Zane Maloney and Theo Pourchaire.

Fight for the podium

Pourchaire, the championship number two, was overtaken by Arthur Leclerc on lap 21. The brother of Charles Leclerc, unlike the other drivers at the front of the field, was driving on soft tyres and then quickly attacked Maloney. Leclerc eventually lost the battle and his soft tyres seemed to have had their best time, after which Pourchaire overtook the Monegasque again. The battles for the final podium positions were very favourable to leader Martins, who managed to build up a lead of more than five seconds and thus won the race despite his penalty.
