Richard Verschoor won the main race of the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday morning. The Dutch F2 driver started from P11 and recorded his third win in Formula 2 after a spectacular race. Frederik Vesti ended up being third, with Ayumu Iwasa splitting the two.

Verschoor managed to gain two spots at the start and settled on P9 in the early stages. Polesitter Victor Martins had an unfortunate start, and the Frenchman soon dropped back to fifth, leaving the lead to Dane Frederik Vesti.

On lap 28, a safety car was brought out because of Arthur Leclerc. The Monegasque driver lost one of his wheels in turn five after his team did not mount the wheel properly during a pit stop. Dutchman Verschoor, who had stayed outside for a long time, allowing him a 'free' pit stop under the safety car, was able to start the restart from P5. The Van Amersfoort driver was well away and soon caught Ayumu Iwasa and Theo Pourchaire, who were ahead of him.

Verschoor for victory

On the penultimate lap, he took the lead after a nice battle with Vesti, and on the last lap, Ayumu Iwasa also managed to pass the Dane, followed by a fierce battle between the Red Bull junior and Verschoor. However, it was the latter who finished first.

Afterwards, the race winner said he was emotionally happy with his team and the result, but he mainly thought of his good friend Dilano van 't Hoff, who died tragically during a race at Spa on Saturday afternoon.
