Mick Schumacher was finally able to take a seat in the Mercedes for the first time between the Grands Prix in Spain and Canada. For the German team, Michael Schumacher s son did a Pirelli test, using the intended tyres for '24. Eventually, Schumacher junior wants to make his return to the F1 grid.

With George Russell and (probably) Lewis Hamilton under contract for the next few years, a racing seat at Mercedes does not seem to be in the cards for Schumacher for the time being. In the background, however, he has already proved his worth, the German team's James Allison told a press conference in Canada.

'Especially not crashing'

Looking back at the Pirelli test, the technical director said: 'I think very very aware that the job of a driver in those circumstances is just to be a decent metronome for the tyre guys to make their conclusions about the tyres. And given that if we shunt the thing, that you're actually paying for all the repairs out of the cost cap, it's definitely not to shunt the thing. So he drove nicely, repeatably, reliably and gave us the platform for the tyre engineers to make their conclusions."

In Canada, Schumacher was already back in Mercedes' pit box. Should Hamilton or Russell be unable to participate in a Grand Prix at any time, Schumacher will take the vacant spot. When the German will take a seat in the car again for another test is still unknown.
