Jacques Villeneuve has called Ferrari's choice of tyres in Singapore "arrogant", as Sebastian Vettel his initial set of hypersofts for ultra-softs rather than softs, which proved to be a disadvantage in the end.

Lewis Hamilton converted his pole position into a win on Sunday night in Singapore, extending his championship lead to 40 points now. Vettel was heavily favoured to win the race and also get pole, but neither thing happened for the German.

After qualifying in third, he couldn't gain a single place, meaning Hamilton has extended his championship lead by another ten points. With only six races to go, a fifth title looks very unlikely for Vettel, but Villeneuve explains that they can't give up now.

"It's a heavy defeat, but they must always keep believing," the Canadian told FormulaPassion.

"The call to the box of Vettel was the biggest mistake, because he lost three seconds behind Perez, in the return lap of Verstappen.

"The error of Ferrari was to be arrogant in the choice of tyres, opting for only one pair of softs for the weekend, which they could not try.

"They have bet everything on the qualification, a mistake that those who fight for the championship can not commit."

He then explained that Lewis Hamilton is a class apart, which can be seen by the deficit between him and Valtteri Bottas, who has the same car.

"He understands when he must be exuberant, aggressive, or when he must control.

"There's a huge difference compared to his teammate and drives beyond the capabilities of his car.

"Bottas is not Hamilton, he never had his talent."
