Of Formula E, it is one of its hallmarks: the races are all held on street circuits. Formula 1 also increasingly prefers (semi-)street circuits to traditional tracks. Not everyone is happy about that. Indeed, Alexander Albon, Williams driver, has a distinct preference for the old-school circuits.

In recent seasons, the F1 calendar has seen the addition of several state-of-the-art tracks. Think Miami, Qatar, Jeddah and soon Las Vegas will follow. "But it does feel like most of the tracks we go to, the new tracks, there is a nearer city, designed track around the city," said Albon, speaking to GPBlog and others.

'Older circuits deliver best races'

"Great for the fans, great for the infrastructure with all the hotels and what have you. But at least from my experience, and maybe from your experience too, the race tracks tend to have the best racing. More space, you can do much quicker corners, wider corners, very limited buildings and what have you, 90 degree corners at a street place. That's what we need, we need to be able to do different lines, carry different speeds," the former Red Bull Racing driver believes.

Soon, Formula 1's debut at Las Vegas awaits. The circuit has mostly long straights, on which considerable speeds can be achieved. On paper, the circuit does not look like a big challenge for the drivers. Albon says of the street circuit in the American gambling city: "I'd love to have, instead of Vegas, gone to a proper American style race track, that would be really cool."
