De Vries denies himself chance at Q3: 'That took away all chances'

Nyck de Vries starts the Spanish Grand Prix in 14th place. The AlphaTauri driver drove a faster time than Yuki Tsunoda, who starts 15th, but still the Dutchman had hoped for more. He told GPblog and others that he was a bit disappointed that there was not more to come.

"I'm a little bit disappointed, and I have mixed feelings about the final result and classification because I think we've had a very competitive and strong weekend, well basically from FP1 all the way through qualifying, but due to my two spins exiting 11th I wasted too many tyres, so I ran out of new tyres for Q2, and that obviously took all the realistic opportunities away for a better qualifying position, and I'm disappointed about that," said de Vries.

De Vries spins twice in qualifying

The 28-year-old driver lost his AT04 twice in the same place, at the exit of turn 11, so over the team radio De Vries expressed surprise. Because what was he doing wrong? "I kind of saw the track was dry, everywhere it was dry, hence I was committing and pushing but twice I lost it there, very late in the exit phase, so I just didn't understand what was happening there."

There was also no immediate feedback on the data at the pit wall. "It's not about data, if something is invisible, then it's hard to put your finger on it, but it was clear that the grip was poor because I lost it there twice, and then in my third attempt I just took it easy and short shifted to avoid a third spin," concluded the still pointless driver.
