Carlos Sainz has always divided opinion when it comes to his ability, and former F1 driver Marc Surer has now called the Spaniard "overrated" as the debate of his future is raging.

Sainz has had an up-and-down career in the F1. When he first started out at Toro Rosso, Sainz looked like a very good talent as he earned a move to Renault last year. At Renault, the Spaniard looked unable to challenge his teammate Nico Hülkenberg in the first stages, but lately, it's been Sainz who's been beating the German more often than not.

Now, he will be without a seat next season, as Daniel Ricciardo will be taking his place in 2019. Normally it's the other way around, as Surer.

"You see it at Sauber, where Leclerc has come in and has instantly changed the team," he explained to Motorsport-Total.

"Hulkenberg is simply very quick, even though he's bigger and heavier.

"He always beats his teammate.

"Besides, Sainz was slightly overrated.

"He was close with Max Verstappen, but the small differences make all the difference in F1," the Swiss ex-driver concluded
