The Friday of the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix is over. Towering favourite and two-time world champion Max Verstappen was not the fastest. Neither was his Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez. It was Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso with a 1:30:907.

One can cautiously consider that the first races will see Verstappen and Alonso compete against each other. Alonso has been fast since the winter tests and has so far shown his ability to top the timesheet in all sessions. FP2 was for Alonso and the Spaniard set the fastest time in both sector 1 and sector 3. Max Verstappen was a scant two-tenths slower, but was fastest again in sector 2.

For his compatriot Nyck de Vries, things look less good. The AlphaTauri driver finished nineteenth. Only Logan Sargeant of Williams was slower. There is particularly much work to be done for Red Bull's sister team, which just brought a lot of upgrades to this Grand Prix.
