Audi is preparing to step into Formula 1 in 2026. Meanwhile, with the partnership with Sauber, a lot is already happening behind the scenes to maximise the chances of future success. Stefan Dreyer speaking opposite Motorsport-magazin.com enthusiastic about the adventure.

Dreyer is one of the few people involved in Audi's entry into Formula 1 from day one. In doing so, he not only spoke to the FIA and Formula 1, but also met with several engine manufacturers to discuss the future of the motorsport class.

As new regulations in Formula 1 apply from 2026, Audi decided to make the switch. The past period gives Dreyer a good feeling. "We have achieved a lot of what we wanted. That was a basic requirement, otherwise we wouldn't have started," he said.

It allowed Audi to announce last calendar year that the partnership with Sauber would continue. "I had to pinch myself when it was publicly announced at Spa and then it was out in the world," Dreyer recalled fondly.

More interested in F1

Audi does not seem to be the only company stepping into Formula 1 in three years' time, as Ford, Hyundai, Porsche and Cadillac are also reportedly still interested in taking up the challenge. The next few years should reveal whether these plans actually go ahead.
