Max Verstappen is the example that shows you can make it to Formula 1 'even as a Dutch driver'. The Dutchman had a lot of help from his father to achieve his dream. Whether he will also give that help to his children? That remains to be seen.

Indeed, the Red Bull Racing driver says to De Limburger: "It used to be always said that it was impossible for the Dutch to make it to Formula 1. That is not true. If you put you foot on the pedal, it doesn't matter where you come from. I hope that when I'm 31, there will just be a new one ready." Whether that 'new one' will be his own child, the Dutchman does not rule out. At least, it won't be possible until much later. In any case, Verstappen knows how he will deal with it if his future children also want to race.

Verstappen would take a different approach to his father

"I definitely want children and if they want to race, that's fine. I do think I would do it differently from how my father and I approached it. At the moment, I don't see myself doing that. But for me, it's easy to talk because I don't have children. I might think very differently when the time comes. But, the passion he had went a long way. He did everything for me. Tuning engines, preparing karts. I can't see myself doing that. In any case, I'm not going to push my kids to race. They have to want it themselves."

It will be some time before the scenario Verstappen outlines becomes a reality. The stars have to be right, too. The two-time world champion can't combine his F1 career with his child's racing education. Verstappen: "And if you do go for it with your son or daughter, you can't drive in Formula 1 yourself, I think. You have to start laying the foundations from the age of four. I want to be there myself then."
