Lewis Hamilton has a record of winning at least one race in every single Formula 1 season during his career, but he has one race left in 2022 to keep that streak alive. Mercedes won their first race in the season in the penultimate Grand Prix of the year, and it was Hamilton's teammate Russell who took the win.

Hamilton, via a crash with Max Verstappen, finished second in the race. A late safety car brought the pack together and Mercedes allowed the two drivers to race. However, Russell ensured he kept a gap greater than one second. Hamilton was asked by Sky Sports whether he felt disappointed that it was his teammate got the win, but the seven-time World Champion denied negative feelings.

"I feel really good. We've worked so hard this year and to be able to fight for the front row and to be able to fight for a podium I am elated for the whole team," Hamilton told Sky Sports.

Mercedes improve

A unique concept was spotted on the Mercedes car in pre-season testing, and it didn't work. The team struggled massively with porpoising and that meant they were out of the World Championship before it even started. 2022 marked the end of a Constructors' title-winning streak that dates back to 2014. But Mercedes are on their way back up which Hamilton was keen to highlight.

"It's incredible the turnaround and it's all down to the incredible men and women back at the factory. Who are working so hard all season. Congratulations to George. This is a wonderful win. A much more straightforward day for him than me but still grateful to get a 1-2 for the team," Hamilton added.
