Jack Doohan will make his debut in official Formula One training this Friday, reports Motorsport.com. The Formula 2 driver may get into the Alpine during the first free practice session in Mexico. Also in Abu Dhabi, the young Australian may get behind the wheel of the Alpine car in a practice session.

Formula 1 teams have been obliged since early 2022 to use a driver without any F1 experience at least twice a season during official free practice. Almost all teams have now given at least one chance to a junior driver, except Alpine. The French factory team is therefore yet to field a rookie twice during the last three race weekends and this Friday they will do so for the first time. In the first free practice for the Mexican Grand Prix, Jack Doohan will reportedly take a seat in the A522, something he may do again three weeks later during FP1 for the Abu Dhabi GP.

Currently fourth at F2

Doohan competes in Formula 2 this year and is enjoying a good debut year there. He is currently in fourth place with only the weekend in Abu Dhabi to go. Moreover, the Australian is also an Alpine junior driver and, as a result, has already tested several times with the team's 2021 car.

Official confirmation from Alpine will follow soon. In all likelihood, there are currently some things that still need to be finalised around Oscar Piastri. The young Australian was due to complete free practice this year for Alpine, who hoped to get him ready for a full seat in 2023 this way but, since his announced departure to McLaren, this is no longer on the cards.

Rookies

A number of teams must also field a rookie in the final three races of 2022 to comply with FIA requirements. For instance, Mercedes chooses to field Nyck de Vries during VT1 in Mexico. There, he will be joined by Pietro Fittipaldi on behalf of Haas F1 and Logan Sargeant in the Williams.

In the final weekend of the F1 season, more teams are set to fulfil their commitment: for instance, Pato O'Ward may board at McLaren, Felipe Drugovich at Aston Martin and Robert Shwartzman may drive for Ferrari. Alfa Romeo has already fulfilled the requirement, while from Red Bull and AlphaTauri it is not yet known how they will complete their final training. F2 driver Liam Lawson is the most obvious driver for that, although both teams would have to use him at a different time.
