An extremely dangerous situation occurred during the rainy Japanese Grand Prix. Pierre Gasly received a hefty penalty, but the organisation of the race and safety supervision were also much to blame. Gasly is happy with the FIA's quick action.

Following Carlos Sainz' s crash on the first lap of the Japanese GP, Gasly picked up a large piece of a billboard and had to go straight to the pit lane for a new front wing. Then to reach the traffic behind the safety car, the Frenchman drove very fast on the soaking wet track. The moment Gasly was still driving fast, a tractor was already on the track to take away Sainz's Ferrari. It ended well, but that very circuit is where things went fatally wrong in the past with Jules Bianchi and a tractor on the track.

Gasly happy with FIA steps

The FIA immediately went to work after the Japan GP with an investigation into the dangerous situation and the confusion over the points scoring that followed after the race. The report was quickly brought out and the FIA immediately announced rule changes, much to Gasly's delight.

Motorsport.com asked the Frenchman about the FIA's investigation. Gasly believes the main goal has been achieved. Despite a particularly harsh penalty he received of no less than 20 seconds, he spoke with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem after the race. In that conversation, the AlphaTauri driver indicated that he was particularly curious about what will be done to prevent these situations in the future. That the FIA has started working on this, Gasly sees as a good step forward. He is also pleased with the speed with which the governing body has acted.

Gasly commemorates Bianchi

The situation greatly affected the driver. It was a particularly bad thing and, according to Gasly, it should never have happened (again). Gasly speaks candidly: "There were no real consequences, except maybe mentally. I was shocked about what happened and for the people who could remember what happened to Jules (Bianchi)."
