He might not be driving for Red Bull yet but Pierre Gasly has already had important input for the senior Red Bull outfit. The Frenchman, currently driving for Toro Rosso Honda fed back on the Honda power unit that Red Bull have chosen to jump to from 2019 forward.

Ahead of his home grand prix, Gasly took part in the press conference on Thursday during which he stated he had feedback on the Honda upgrades that may have influenced Red Bull's decision to switch to Honda.

“I didn’t push for it because I’m not the one who takes the decision – but of course they asked me for feedback since the beginning of the year about the engine.

“I’ve tried to give them as precise as possible to help them in their decisions but I think, yes, there were much bigger talks behind it.”

Gasly of course is aiming for a drive with the four-time world champions and hasn't lost sight of that, especially given the current rumours surrounding Daniel Ricciardo and a possible move away.

“And then, yeah, about Daniel’s situation, I think it’s still pretty early in the season to talk about it, of course. Everyone is making speculation but at the moment there is nothing really serious.

“Of course, clearly, you know, in Formula One, you want to be fighting for the top positions and that’s what I want to be fighting for in my career and clearly my target as a Red Bull driver is to be the Red Bull seat as quickly as possible – but at the moment I’m only in my first season in Formula One, so I just try to focus on my job.

“I know that, if I do good races, opportunities will come up – and that’s the only thing I try to focus on at the moment. So, we will see what Daniel does, and… yeah… bit too early, I just try to focus on my performances and on myself to give my best.”
