In recent years there have been many changes in Formula 1. We know the extra point for the fastest lap in the race and the sprint races. But that will not be the end of it if it is up to Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, according to Motorsport-total.com.

If it is up to Domenicali, Formula 1 will look at various options to make the sport more attractive. From the 2021 season, the driver who is fastest in the race, provided he finishes in the top ten, will receive an extra point. This has led to all kinds of strategic decisions: drivers are brought in to score the point themselves, but teammates are also brought in to take the point away from the opponent. Every point counts, as became clear at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. In 2021, the sprint race was also added to the format, and it is now known that the number will be increased in the future.

Bonus points in free practice

But that's not all when Domenicali is in charge. He is brimming with ideas. He would like to see a bonus point for the fastest driver in the free practice sessions. Or, on weekends when no sprint race is scheduled, a single time trial could be run. He would also like to see qualifying for a short race on Saturday, instead of the third free practice. Then he would want to shake up the field with a reverse grid.

So far, the teams have not been uniformly enthusiastic. But Domenicali points out that in races where the field has been shuffled, such as Monza last weekend due to grid penalties, the race has been exciting and has resulted in some good overtaking. He believes that Formula 1 is almost obliged to give the format a chance.
