George Russell surprised friend and foe alike on Saturday afternoon by securing pole position in Hungary. While Mercedes struggled to catch up at the start of the weekend, the team proved they can fight back at lightning speed. That offers hope for the future for the German racing team.

Mercedes is well aware that it is still a long way behind Ferrari and Red Bull Racing. When both racing teams are at full strength it is virtually impossible for the team of Russell and Lewis Hamilton to beat them. However, both teams are far from performing at top level.

Indeed, both Ferrari and Red Bull have missed many opportunities this season, giving Mercedes the chance to fight their way onto the podium each time. It has resulted in top three finishes for Hamilton in the last four races, while teammate Russell has also benefited.

In Hungary, Mercedes really showed how powerful the team is. Although on Friday the top five seemed to be far away, the team worked hard behind the scenes. It resulted in Mercedes finding a solution and Russell taking pole position.

Mercedes preparing for 2023

For this season, the battle for the world title is unattainable for Mercedes, but the Germans are on track to rejoin the fight next season. Russell looks set to make things difficult for Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, although Hamilton is not to be underestimated.
