Lewis Hamilton sympathises with Ferrari and Charles Leclerc. In the battle for the world title, which will be between Leclerc and Max Verstappen in 2022, the Monegasque lost 25 points to the Dutchman due to his crash in France.

Sympathy for Leclerc

In 2022 it is not Red Bull Racing against Mercedes as in 2021, but Red Bull against Ferrari. Hamilton says he is happy to see the Ferrari's being so fast this season. Despite the fast F1-75, the team is behind Verstappen and Red Bull in the drivers' and constructors' standings. "I’m gutted for Charles, who’s being doing a great job, as has Carlos [Sainz]," Hamilton said at the FIA press conference.

Tough job for Ferrari

"It's a tough job and I feel for the whole team because I know what that can feel like," Hamilton continued. Verstappen extended his lead over Leclerc in France by 25 points and is now 63 points ahead of the Monegasque. Hamilton calls Ferrari a great team but is realistic about the size of Verstappen's lead. "Yeah, massive gaps, obviously pretty huge so that's pretty smooth sailing in that space generally," Hamilton says of Verstappen and Red Bull.

Yet Hamilton believes Leclerc and Ferrari should not give up just yet. "But a lot can go wrong up ahead [with Red Bull and Verstappen], so I would just advise them just to continue to push," the Brit concludes. There are still ten Grands Prix on the remaining programme for 2022.
