Alfa Romeo calls on Ferrari talent to replace absent Kubica
- GPblog.com
Callum Ilott will be the replacement for Robert Kubica this weekend. Frederic Vasseur let us know this in an interview with Motorsport.com before the Miami Grand Prix.
For years Ilott was considered a great talent and people saw him as possibly capable of breaking through into Formula One. Despite a second place in the 2020 F2 championship, it didn't come to that for the Brit. As part of the Ferrari program, Mick Schumacher (who became F2 champion that year) was preferred for the seat at Haas.
Opportunity for Ilott
Ilott already made his F1 debut for Alfa Romeo during a first free practice session in Portugal. Since then, he has been in action more often for the Italian team, but it did not lead to a seat for 2022. So in 2022, he made the move to America to race for Juncos Hollinger Racing in IndyCar. There he drove four races with a sixteenth place as his best result.
However, his ties with Alfa Romeo and Ferrari remained intact and that now offers Ilott the chance to act as the team's reserve driver in Miami. Robert Kubica is absent this weekend due to a race in the WEC at Spa-Francorchamps. Vasseur announced that the choice for Ilott was logical since he already knows the team. Ilott himself is happy with the opportunity and was already around.
