Official message from the FIA shows four DRS zones for GP in Australia

The information seemed to show up earlier on the Formula 1 website, but in the Official Circuit Map for the Australian Grand Prix, the FIA now actually shows that four DRS zones are available for the race at Albert Park and only two detection points.

Overtaking at Albert Park

After the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix the discussion about the future of DRS and the interpretation of the detection points has been stirred up. The FIA does not care about that discussion for the time being and even chooses to come up with an additional DRS zone in Melbourne. As previously expected, there will be four DRS zones at Albert Park this weekend.

The official message from the FIA containing the Circuit Map shows the modified Albert Park, but also the extra DRS zone. The first zone is located at the start/finish line. The detection point for this is between turns 12 and 13, after which DRS can be used on the straight. On the straight after the first chicane, the DRS can be opened again. There is no new detection point for this, so the same driver as at the first DRS zone gets an opened rear wing again.

Four DRS zones

Between turns 6 and 7 is the detection point for the third and fourth DRS zones. On the new 'straight' after Turn 8 you can open your DRS again and after a short chicane you can do so again after Turn 10. Again, there is only one detection point.

This makes it even easier for the person behind to overtake at Albert Park. The gap can be closed with the first DRS zone, after which the gap can be closed in the second DRS zone. In case the attack in the first zone is successful, it will also be easier to defend because the same driver will have DRS in the second zone.
