Domino effect expected: 'Cars faster in a straight line'

Formula 1 is gearing up for a season with much different rules than in 2021. This means that the teams will not only have to deal with competition from other teams, but they will also have to manage to get the best out of the car again. The chassis will play a big part in that, predicts Edd Straw at The Race.

In recent weeks, the teams announced the car with which they will take to the track in 2022. In the process, there were some surprising things to discover. While Red Bull Racing chooses to keep its cards close to its chest, other teams revealed a lot more.

Chassis regulations to be overhauled

The FIA hopes that the new rules will make it easier for drivers to follow each other, which should increase the number of overtakes. However, it is not only on this point that the teams can make a difference, as there is also a clear change in the chassis.

"Formula 1’s new chassis regulations will have a knock-on effect on the way that the power unit packages are operated during 2022," writes Straw, who goes on to give an example. "The 2022 cars are expected to be faster in a straight line owing to the reduced drag, meaning less full-throttle time."
