British aerodynamics specialist Dan Fallows is the current Technical Director at Aston Martin, having previously served for many years as Head of Aerodynamics at Red Bull Racing. In 2022, controversy arose when Aston Martin’s new car bore a striking resemblance to the Red Bull RB18, but his former employer was unable to prove that Fallows had stolen any designs.
From Jaguar Racing to Red Bull
Fallows began his Formula 1 career at Jaguar Racing, where he was hired in 2002 as a senior aerodynamics specialist. He later moved to Italian chassis manufacturer Dallara before returning in 2006 to the Milton Keynes-based team, which had by then become Red Bull Racing. There, he took on the role of team leader in the aerodynamics department and contributed to the major successes that followed.
From Red Bull to Aston Martin
In mid-2021, Aston Martin announced that Fallows would join the team on January 1, 2022. However, Red Bull contested this move, as Fallows was still under contract until 2023 and had already contributed to the 2022 car's development. A legal dispute followed, and Fallows was reassigned within Red Bull during this period. In January 2022, an agreement was reached that allowed him to join Aston Martin as of April 2, 2022.
Just six weeks after joining Aston Martin, the team introduced a B-spec car that sparked controversy. At the Spanish Grand Prix, the team unveiled a design that closely resembled Red Bull’s RB18. Dubbed the “green Red Bull,” Aston Martin insisted the similarities were purely coincidental. Red Bull was unable to prove any wrongdoing, and no penalties were issued.
Strong Start, Then Setbacks
In 2023, Aston Martin enjoyed a strong start under Fallows’ leadership, scoring eight podium finishes with Fernando Alonso in the AMR23. However, the team’s performance declined in the second half of the season as rivals improved their cars. The 2024 season started less competitively for Aston Martin, with Alonso’s best result being a fifth place and the team sitting fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. These disappointing results led to management changes. In October 2024, Andy Cowell, former head of Mercedes’ F1 power unit program, was appointed as the new CEO of Aston Martin.
Departure as Technical Director
On November 12, 2024, it was announced that Dan Fallows would step down as Technical Director at Aston Martin. However, he will remain within the Aston Martin Group in a new, yet-to-be-defined role. Bob Bell, an experienced engineering figure who joined the team in March 2024, temporarily assumed Fallows’ responsibilities. Aston Martin also hired Red Bull legend Adrian Newey to lead its F1 design team starting March 2025. In addition, Enrico Cardile, former chassis Technical Director at Ferrari, was appointed Chief Technical Officer.
