People have very short memories. It was Red Bull who at the start of the season were determined to have an illegal rear wing. They weren’t penalised for this but given several races to fix it ahead of a new test being brought in. Red Bull pushed a narrative that the Merc wing was illegal for the second half of the season, the only thing found to be wrong with it by the FIA on one occasion was that particular one had broken and hence failed the test - even Horner acknowledged that would not have given a speed advantage. Merc, as is permitted by the regulations, used extra power units and took penalties for doing so, as did almost if not all of the entire field. Toto has done plenty of calling up Masi during the race, but so has Horner - every week on the commentary a radio call by one team is almost always followed by one from the other with an opposing view. They were as bad as each other. Max had a great car this year (Adrian Newey of RB said probably the best over the season, albeit not for the last few races) and is a very talented driver. Over the whole season he was deserving of the title (as would Hamilton have been), but the narrative Red Bull were running ahead of this weekend that this was a “David vs Goliath” battle is just not true.
