Vettel thinks of abolishing DRS: 'We rely too much on this system'

With the new generation of Formula 1 cars, it has become a lot easier for a driver to follow another car. In principle, the closer you can follow, the easier overtaking is as well. Especially when using DRS.

Twelve years ago, Formula 1 introduced the Drag Reduction System (DRS). For years this was virtually the only way to allow similar cars to overtake each other. Meanwhile, more and more voices are calling for an end to DRS.

Indeed, Sebastian Vettel wonders if F1 has become too dependent on DRS. With the new rules, he believes there is no need to use DRS at all anymore. "I think you can follow closer, there is less drag effect as well," Vettel told Fi.com. "We do rely on the DRS probably more than in the past, to some extent."

The German - currently driving for Aston Martin - is curious to see how the current generation of F1 cars compete when there is no longer DRS on them. "The interesting bit would be to take the DRS off and see how the racing really is, if you are able to overtake a lot better than in the past."
