Ferrari to launch new engine in 2021: 'A significant step'
- GPblog.com
In 2019 Ferrari had the best engine for a while, but after some things reportedly didn't work out here, Ferrari fell way back. In 2021, it has a big gap in power to Honda and Mercedes, but that may change soon.
New engine for Ferrari
After Ferrari had to scale back their engine from the FIA at the end of 2019, we haven't seen the Italian team out front again. It seemed clear that the team had cheated with the guidelines, and now had to pay for it. In 2020 the team fell way back, but even in 2021, the engine is still not back on top.
There's a reason for that, as Ferrari's engine is still largely the one from 2020. Where Honda for example came up with a brand new engine, Ferrari didn't use that option yet. In 2021 you are allowed to update all parts once, and Ferrari hasn't done that yet.
''We will come up with updates for the power unit. This year you get to use a brand new power unit. That means you can introduce an update of all the components: ICE, turbo, MGU-H, batteries, MGU-K and so on'', says Mattia Binotto in conversation with Motorsport.com.
A little more patience for the Tifosi
''We didn't have the full power unit ready at the start of the season. So there are still components unchanged compared to last year. And we will give them an upgrade. I expect that to be a significant step for us towards the end of the season'', concludes the Ferrari team boss.
The Tifosi shouldn't get up on their socks just yet though as the update is not expected before the Belgian or Italian Grand Prix. Ferrari fans will have to be patient. The focus is still on 2022, and for the team 2021 is mainly a gap year towards the new regulations.
