Windsor: 'Mercedes can't accuse Verstappen of this anymore'

Looking back on the nail-biting qualifying battle at Silverstone, Formula 1 journalist and expert Peter Windsor saw a class performance from Lewis Hamilton, but he also knows that, with Mercedes seeming to regain its momentum, their allegations of Red Bull's increased top speed no longer hold water.

"It was a brilliant first lap by Lewis," Windsor begins in the usual analysis on his YouTube channel. "On a circuit that, on paper, was always going to suit Mercedes."

Windsor continued: "If Mercedes were not going to be quick at Silverstone, then they were really in trouble. But they did manage to pull it out. It was only by a tenth of a second that Lewis got that lap."

Empty accusations

The accusations that Mercedes often make against Red Bull in the event of a loss, which often revolve around an alleged lack of top speed compared to the competitor, are not missed by Windsor either. "And for once, no one at Mercedes or Lewis Hamilton can say: ‘We’re getting blown away on the straights’, because the top speeds were just about even."

The measuring point on Hangar straight showed that Hamilton reached a top speed of 322 kilometres per hour, while Verstappen remained stuck at 320. "Mercedes, if anything, had a slight advantage", Windsor concluded accordingly.
