Marko: "We don't want to make the same mistake as BMW in 2008"

Red Bull Racing showed at the Styrian Grand Prix that it is a serious contender for the world title this season. Max Verstappen was much faster in the race than Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes, which finished in second place. The Austrians are prepared to do a lot to win the world title.

The Dutch driver was the favourite beforehand. Not only was Verstappen driving on a Red Bull circuit that he knew well, he was also in excellent shape. At the French Grand Prix, Verstappen battled with Hamilton and won, increasing his lead in the world championship. He also went home victorious in Austria.

Although Mercedes have indicated that they also want to focus on 2022, Red Bull are not thinking too much about next year for now. Above all, the team believes it is important to do everything possible to become world champions. "We don't want to make the same mistake as BMW in 2008, when Kubica had a realistic chance of winning the championship, but the business plan said to switch early to next season," stated Helmut Marko in conversation with Auto, Motor und Sport.

Risk of Red Bull

Red Bull's advisor believes the team must take some risk to give Verstappen everything he needs to beat Hamilton. "No risk, no fun! We'll have to sort that out somehow then."
