For several years now, the fastest way to get to the finish line in an F1 race has been a one-stop. The teams have figured out that driving a bit slower is faster than an extra pit stop. This to the dismay of the fans, who miss a bit of the spectacle. During the GP of Spain this might be different.

These are the words of Mario Isola of Pirelli after the qualifying session. What he saw particularly in Q2 offers the chance of a successful two-stopper during the race on Sunday. "Unlike Portugal, we didn’t see widespread use of the medium tyre in Q2, which means that the top 10 will all start on the soft tyre tomorrow", says Isola in Pirelli's official retrospective.

He continued: "This indicates that the soft will form a key part of the race plan, with many drivers set to run a ‘sprint’ strategy that could take in two stints on the soft compound."

Will drivers have enough new tyres at their disposal?

Isola believes a one-stop is still possible with proper tyre management, but drivers may opt for this only because they are forced to use the hard tyre due to a lack of new mediums and softs.
