Tsunoda's team boss is sure: 'Red Bull-junior goes to AlphaTauri'

In 2021 a number of F2 drivers will make the transition to Formula 1. The last time several F2 drivers were promoted to the top class was in 2019 with Alexander Albon, George Russell and Lando Norris. The group now driving in F2 seems to be strong enough for F1 and Yuki Tsunoda's team boss expects a number of them to make the transition.

"There is no doubt that Mick Schumacher will drive at Alfa Romeo and Yuki will go to AlphaTauri," explains Trevor Carlin, Carlin's team boss in the F2, to Autosportweb. "Yuki is currently the fastest driver in F2, but he is not at the top because of the many failures and incidents he has had during the season.

Red Bull stays with Honda engine

"He learns very quickly. He is still a rookie but is already fighting for the championship. It's been a long time since a Japanese driver did something like that," explains Carlin, who was able to witness the developments of his junior up close. The question is whether Tsunoda's position at AlphaTauri is as solid as it is now, with Honda leaving the sport after 2021. Tsunoda is with Red Bull Racing because of its collaboration with Honda.

However, Carlin expects the cooperation between Red Bull and Honda to remain close for a long time to come. "Red Bull will still use the Honda engine, which will probably continue under a different name," says Tsunoda's team boss.
