Jean Todt will be the president of the FIA until the end of 2021 and after that the vacancy will be open to new people, as Todt has no ambition to continue after three terms. One of those interested would be former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo. This is what the Italian Autosprint writes on its website.

Stand for election

The website has received an anonymous tip from someone who is knowledgeable. This person indicated at Autosprint that Bernie Ecclestone and Luca di Montezemolo should be watched because "those two are planning something".

Ecclestone would support di Montezemolo in his throw at the presidency of the FIA. But whether the Italian will actually do so is unclear. In order to have a chance to win the presidency, di Montezemolo will first have to stand for election.

Once that is done, he will have to pass all the voters to convince them to place their trust in him. This is time consuming and besides that the Italian wouldn't really like political manoeuvring, since he has always made his own decisions, according to Autosprint.

Sensitive...

Should di Montezemolo stand for the position, the question is how much support he can count on. With his background at Ferrari, it is good to imagine that some Formula 1 teams do not find this an ideal candidate.

Ferrari and the FIA have always had a separate bond, partly because of the veto that the Italian car brand has over decisions in Formula 1. The whole hassle about the alleged illegal engine of Ferrari in 2019 will obviously not help either.
