Hamilton jokes he has to pay Kimi so he's not the oldest

Lewis Hamilton may be performing like he is in the prime of his career as he sets his sight on Schumacher's record and the Brit has insisted he does not feel his age, despite being one of the senior heads on the grid.

Hamilton was one of the oldest drivers on the grid last season as Formula 1 welcomed in a new generation of young drivers, with the likes of George Russell and Alex Albon making their debuts in 2019. However, that didn't stop Hamilton dominating as he won his sixth Drivers' Championship, moving him within one of Schumacher's record.

He's showing no signs of slowing and the Mercedes driver admits, he doesn't feel his age but realises he's one of the old guard.

"I am one of the veterans, that's right. I have to go and pay Kimi [Raikkonen] so that he stays and I am not the oldest. Fortunately, I think he will keep going," Hamilton told GQ.

"I don't feel old at all, and I feel as young as I have ever felt. I feel fit and I am fitter than ever. Everything just seems to work better now, partly due to the experience I have now.

"I do not even think that it is more difficult now to stay physically in top form, although I am sure I will reach that point at some point."
