Jos Verstappen, father of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen, has said that he has done more for his sons’ career in Formula 1 than he did his own.

Max’s F1 career has already been vastly different to his fathers, who raced through eight seasons between 1994 and 2003, finishing on the podium twice in Hungary and Belgium in 1994.

Whereas the 22-year old has achieved a large amount of success, claiming eight wins and 23 podiums since his debut for Red Bull mid-way through 2016, having been at Toro Rosso the season before.

“Max was my life project, yes,” said Jos to Dutch publication Formule 1.

“I wanted to win with him, become a champion. We had a goal together.”

Jos did win Le Mans in 2008 but isn’t bothered by his achievements, rather enjoying watching his son succeed in F1.

“I don’t even want to talk about that,” he said. “I found the time with Max much more fun than my own career.

“I think that when you can achieve something like that with your own child, it is much more intense than when you do it for yourself.

“Put it this way: I did more for Max’s career than for my own career.”
