Brown insists Alonso is still an ambassador but is free to find a seat

Zak Brown has revealed Fernando Alonso is welcome to find another seat in Formula 1 but insisted that the Spaniard remains an ambassador for the constructor. This comes after McLaren revealed their driver lineup for 2020.

Following their impressive form this season, especially the last two races which has seen four points finishes out of four, McLaren confirmed that Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz Jr would line up for the team next season. This means there is no seat for Fernando Alonso at the Woking-based team despite being heavily linked with a return to the pinnacle of motorsport.

Alonso recently said if he wanted to return to F1 he could and Zak Brown has revealed he is welcome to find a seat if he wants, insisting he still remains an ambassador to McLaren.

"Fernando remains an ambassador with McLaren," Brown told reporters.

"We have a great relationship with him and speak with him about some racing programmes in the future that are not Formula 1 related."

Brown added that the team would support him if he made that decision to find a new team: "But we're happy for him if he wants to get back into Formula 1, because we don't have a seat available, to go race for another team.

"We'd very much support him in that if that's what he wants to do."
