Fernando Alonso was confirmed as a McLaren ambassador last week, keeping him in the loop for the 2019 F1 season after he left the sport after the end of season race in Abu Dhabi but he’s left the door ajar, hinting at a possible return.

Alonso partnered Stoffel Vandoorne in 2018 outperforming his teammate but both left the McLaren team with Vandoorne starting in Formula E and Alonso pursuing the triple crown. Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz replaced the pair but after signing onto his ambassadorial role, Alonso has been rumoured for an early return.

In a conversation with Rubens Barrichello which has now been released, Alonso said: “Formula 1 is always going to miss you because they are the fastest cars on the planet.

“If you have the opportunity to reach a leading team, the possibility of winning, you will always say 'yes' because F1 is F1.”

Alonso is pursuing the triple crown and he reiterated his desire to race the Indy and Le Mans again.

“Indianapolis is the priority this year. I'll do the missing WEC races, Le Mans again, but my head is set in Indianapolis, trying to win that race,” added Alonso.
