New Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo is conscious that his car won't be fighting for wins in the 2019 season, but the Aussie does think that the drivers could have more impact on the standings in the midfield battle than at the front of the grid.

Renault's goal for 2019 is to leave the midfield behind and start closing the gap to the top three in front of them. That gap was over 300 points in 2018, so it won't be an overnight job, but Ricciardo has patience and faith.

"I don't expect to be on the front row and I don't expect to be on the last row either," the 29-year-old told Motorsport-Total.

"We'll be somewhere in between."

After testing, it's become clear the midfield is extremely close this season, with Alfa Romeo, McLaren, Haas F1 and Toro Rosso all being right there with the French team. Ricciardo knows this, and it is the reason why he thinks the drivers will be the difference between the teams.

"One good lap in Q2 or Q3 could be the difference. One 'free' lap could mean three positions on the grid.

"I look forward to the fights. Of course, it's better to drive at the front, but I expect a lot. Driving by yourself for 60 laps isn't fun either."
