Juan Pablo Montoya has opened up about the goings-on during his time in Formula 1 in the Beyond the Grid podcast. The Colombian also marvels at today's manners within the paddock.

The seven-time Grand Prix winner thinks drivers are too nice to each other today. "We used to rarely talk to each other. Nowadays, everyone goes paddling and eating out with each other. When you are so nice, it is hard to be an asshole and race at the limit every now and then."

'Everyone complains about the sheer volume of racing, but I would love it'

Ironman Montoya also has a clear opinion regarding the current Formula 1 calendar. Drivers, with Max Verstappen leading the way, regularly complain about the overcrowded calendar, but Montoya says he would "love it" to race so much.

"Everyone often whines these days about the large number of races. But I would have much preferred ten more races in my time. We might have had only 15 or 16 races a season, but the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after a race weekend we were already back in the car for testing. Although we had fewer races in the calendar, we were in the car more back then than we are now."

The former Williams and Mclaren driver also talks about the different way of racing these days. "The mentality used to be completely different. Every lap in the race was like qualifying in my time. We could really push the limit of the car and the tyres. Nowadays, it's more about saving."
