No podiums for Alonso but: 'Aston Martin is better than in '23'

Fernando Alonso was a frequent guest on the podium of honour after a Grand Prix in '23. With a quarter of the season in 2024 behind him, the tally now stands at zero. That is strange at first glance, Alonso seems to want to say, as the current Aston Martin is a better car than last season's.

However, Alonso cannot blame anyone: "When I see the effort that we are putting into the season development, when I see the wind tunnel progress since last year or the end of the year, this is a much better profile than what we see now. But it's a very tough environment. We are fighting against top, top teams, and they keep bringing upgrades as well. They started with, eventually, a better baseline, so we need to catch up," Alonso realises.

Alonso likes the challenge

Still, the Spaniard believes this year's car is better than last season's. "But the results are not because the top four teams are doing an incredible job. But we like that challenge as well. I mean we want to one day fight for a world championship. It's something that we need to go through that process as well of becoming a top team off track."

In any case: Alonso does not grieve, even though he has not yet been able to pick up a trophy. "I'm happier this year with the team progress and with the car than last year. But if you see the first six or seven races that will be difficult to explain in terms of results. But I have full trust in the team. And I see a good direction now."
