Verstappen was the fastest driver on the track in Japan on both hard and soft tyres. Perez did good business by staying within two tenths of his teammate. Ferrari still look to be the two team in Japan, but at a greater distance from Red Bull Racing.
Mercedes were also in good shape during the first free practice session. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and fifth respectively. The McLarens were somewhat disappointing. At a track where McLaren was on the podium with two drivers last year, it now just finished with two drivers in the top ten.
