Sainz leaves Ferrari: what are the options for 2025?

Carlos Sainz seems to be the victim of a mega deal. Lewis Hamilton is making the move to Ferrari and so Sainz has to pack his bags. What are the options for the Spaniard in 2025?

Will Sainz swap with Hamilton?

The most obvious option, perhaps, is a direct swap with Hamilton. It would make the search easier for Mercedes and Sainz would retain a seat with a top team. Sainz also fits within Mercedes' picture. Sainz is articulate, tidy, and calm. It would be ideal alongside the still-young George Russell.

It would be entirely obvious if La Gazzetta dello Sport's rumours are true. The Italian sports newspaper reports that Hamilton will switch to Ferrari as early as 2024. In that scenario, most other options are already fixed, and a swap seems to be the only option for Sainz.

Is Sainz the ideal man next to Verstappen?

Carlos Sainz could also find himself back in Red Bull Racing's picture. Max Verstappen is still with Red Bull Racing until 2028, but Sergio Perez's contract expires at the end of this season. Sainz would be an upgrade over the Mexican, but is Sainz waiting for a role as second fiddle?

The frontrunner for Audi

Therefore, the most logical option is Stake F1 or the future seat at Audi. Audi and Sainz have been flirting with each other for some time, especially due to Sainz senior's good relationship with the German brand. The big drawback for Sainz is the team's current performance. Under the Alfa Romeo name, the team did not surpass ninth place among constructors in 2023.

Yet a strong core is beginning to form there, with Andreas Seidl as CEO and James Key as the technical director. Sainz remembers these two names well from his time at McLaren. At the new project, Sainz would also become the undisputed frontrunner, a long-held wish for the Spaniard.
