The Christian Union is coming up with a proposal for a so-called 'Max Verstappen' levy. The political party believes that people who do not live in the Netherlands 'for tax reasons' should contribute to the Dutch state. Jos Verstappen lashes out at ChristenUnie MP Pieter Grinwis on Twitter.

Jos Verstappen critical of 'Max Verstappen' levy proposal

Like many Formula 1 drivers, Max Verstappen is a resident of Monaco. The principality is known as a tax haven, in which residents do not have to pay income tax or wealth tax. The Red Bull Racing driver moved to Monte Carlo when he started his F1 career in 2015.

The ChristenUnie believes it should be an end to wealthy Dutch people not paying taxes in their country of origin. " If you do not live in the Netherlands for tax reasons, you may start contributing to the Dutch state," Grinwis said in a radio broadcast on NPO Radio 1. Jos Verstappen reacted critically to the MP's proposal. " What a crackpot this is," he said in a response on X, formerly Twitter.

Verstappen may drive under the Dutch flag in F1, but he has never lived there. He was born in Hasselt and grew up in Belgium, as did his Belgian mother Sophie Kumpen. However, he did go to school in the Netherlands and was raised as a Dutchman. Therefore, he says he feels he is mostly Dutch, which drove him to choose to race with Dutch nationality.
