McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne will officially be making the switch from Formula 1 to Formula E next season, as it has been confirmed that the Belgian will be driving for HWA next season.

It was already known that Vandoorne would no longer be active for McLaren, as the team had already signed Carlos Sainz from Renault and rookie Lando Norris. Rumours of Vandoorne heading towards FE with HWA grew stronger, but it's now been made official.

The 26-year-old was first thought to be making the switch to Sauber as he has a strong relationship with their team principal Fred Vasseur, but he ruled it out as the Swiss-Italian team signed both Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi.

"I am honoured that HWA have signed me for their Formula E programme," Vandoorne stated after the news broke.

"HWA are such a great team with a long and successful history in motorsport. All the people I've met so far are really passionate about racing.

"Also, it´s great to work alongside such an experienced driver as [HWA FE teammate] Gary Paffett. I am pretty sure that we will benefit from each other during the season.

"Although we are all newbies to the series, I have no doubt that we will have a steep learning curve.

"However, it won't be easy. My objective is therefore to become competitive in the series as soon as possible and to make a good impression."

His teammate will be Gary Paffett, who was announced last week. Paffett just secured the DTM title for Mercedes.
